KUCCPS
The KUCCPS (Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service) is a government organization that helps students in Kenya get into universities and colleges. It provides information and guidance to help students choose suitable courses and institutions and then matches them up with the best universities and colleges for their skills and interests.
The KUCCPS wants to be fair and equitable in its placement process so that every student has an equal chance of getting into the university or college of their dreams.
The KUCCPS collects data on students’ secondary school performance, as well as their interests and preferences, to help them decide which university or college would be the best fit for each student. They also work with universities and colleges to ensure they have suitable courses and facilities to meet students’ needs.
If you’re a student in Kenya looking to get into university or college, the KUCCPS is a great resource to help you make the right choices for your future.
The KUCCPS believes in a few key principles:
- Customer Centricity: They put the students and their needs first.
- Access and Equity: They want to ensure that every student has an equal chance of getting into the right university or college, regardless of their background or origin.
- Innovativeness: They always look for new and better ways to provide services and make the placement process more efficient.
- Teamwork: They know that they can achieve more when they work together.
- Integrity: They are honest and transparent in all their dealings.

What are cluster points?
Cluster points are a way of comparing and ranking students based on their secondary school performance. The KUCCPS uses cluster points to help decide which university or college best fits each student.
The points are calculated using your grades in the eight subjects you took in KCSE, with more points for better grades. So, the better your grades, the more cluster points you get, and the more likely you will get into the university or college of your choice.
How to calculate cluster points according to KUCCPs?
Let’s walk you through the steps of calculating cluster points:
- Step 1: Add up the total number of points for the eight subjects you took in KCSE, using the table below:
A – 10 points, B+ – 9 points, B – 8 points, B- – 7 points, C+ – 6 points, C – 5 points, C- – 4 points, D+ – 3 points, D – 2 points, D- – 1 point.
- Step 2: Divide the total number of points by 8, which gives you your average score.
- Step 3: Round the average score to the nearest whole number (this is your cluster point score).
- Step 4: The KUCCPS then uses the cluster point score to compare students and decide which university or college best fits each one.
So, if you scored B+, B, B, B, C+, C+, C- and D+, your total points would be:
B+ (9) + B (8) + B (8) + B (8) + C+ (6) + C+ (6) + C- (4) + D+ (3) = 51
So your total points are 51. Now, divide that by 8, to get your average score:
51/8 = 6.375
Round that up to the nearest whole number to get your cluster point score:
6.375 rounds up to 7.
So, your cluster point score is 7!

FAQs
Cluster points and cut-off points are similar but not the same. Cluster points are based on KCSE grades and are used to rank students, while institutions set cut-off points and indicate the minimum grade required for admission.
Cut-off points are the minimum grades required to be considered for a particular course by an institution. They vary from year to year and institution to institution, and they’re a major factor in determining whether or not you’ll be accepted into a program through KUCCPS.
Calculating cluster points in KUCCPS is simple. You add up the points for each grade (e.g. A = 12, B+ = 10, etc.) and divide by the total number of subjects. The resulting number is your cluster point score.
Conclusion
To sum up, KUCCPS courses and cluster points are essential to the KUCCPS placement process. Understanding the courses available and their cluster point requirements is crucial to making informed decisions about your education.
Remember, with knowledge and preparation, you can find the right course and institution that aligns with your aspirations.
