Objectives Of Babcock University

Babcock University’s objectives are to lead each student to a total dedication to life in selfless service for God and humanity and to guide them in the formation of a character marked by integrity, self-discipline, responsibility, tolerance, loyalty, and spiritual leadership.

Historical Development Babcock

The current Babcock University (BU) was founded on September 17, 1959, and was formerly known as Adventist College of West Africa (ACWA).

With just seven ministerial students when it first opened, ACWA was founded by the Seventh-day Adventist Church as a senior college for training church workers from the West African sub-region.

Enrollment included two-year Pre-Nursing students preparing to pursue a nursing career at the Church’s School of Nursing at Ile-Ife, Osun State, and students taking Business Administration as prospective accountants both inside and outside the Church by 1966 when it graduated the first batch of Bachelor of Arts degree holders in its name.

When ACWA signed and began operating an affiliation agreement with Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Michigan, USA, in 1975, it became the first institution in Nigeria.

This partnership made it possible for Andrews University to offer Bachelor of Arts degrees in biology, business administration, history, religion, and secretarial studies.

In response to the changes in its socio-political context, the Adventist Seminary of West Africa (ASWA) replaced ACWA in 1975. Restrictive local considerations forced the Bachelor of Business Administration and Biology degrees to be phased out again in 1983.

With the signing of an affiliation agreement with Andrews University’s Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary in 1988, ASWA achieved yet another academic milestone by being able to offer a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry.

The Master of Arts in Religion was added in 1990, and from 1997 to 2007, both programs were offered during the summer sessions.

An attempt was made to establish a local affiliation with the University of Ibadan under the name “Babcock College” to get national recognition for its standing and curriculum.

The University was founded with three faculties of eleven departments: the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, and the Faculty of Education and Humanities. These faculties eventually transformed into schools.

The fourth school was established as the School of Law and Security Studies. The institution’s 50th and the university’s tenth anniversary were commemorated on June 7, 2009, with the 7th graduation.

Dignitaries from the Federal and State levels and the Seventh-day Adventist Church World Headquarters representatives attended the ceremony.

Since its founding as a private university in Nigeria in 1999, Babcock has upheld the highest standards of innovative educational excellence.

Similarly, departmental upgrades and new programs are the results of a purposeful expansion policy of their programs to suit current market demands and maximize service delivery.

The School of Education & Humanities recently added the departments of Educational Foundations and Music & Creative.

Babcock, the leader in private education provision, has been recognized as the Best Private University in Africa.

Babcock leads the way in Nigeria when it comes to providing education that changes people’s lives and encourages optimism. In this article, we explore Babcock University courses.

Student Development

The University was established to provide opportunities for students to develop higher character qualities that will enable them to maximize their service to God, the Church, and society.

Babcock University operates under a Christian worldview. The University is owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The University’s admission policy is committed to equal opportunity and does not discriminate against qualified persons based on handicap, gender, race, color, nationality, or ethnic origin.

Babcock strives to maintain an environment favourable to students’ spiritual, intellectual, social, vocational, civic, and physical development.
