About Loyal Loyalist College

At the post-secondary level, only trade schools coexisted with universities in the province of Ontario prior to the 1960s; the majority of these institutions had been created largely to assist returning soldiers with their reintegration into society.

In 1967, Loyalist College was established as a part of a provincial program to establish numerous institutions of this type to offer communities in Ontario career-focused diploma and certificate programs in addition to continuing education opportunities. The college’s name honors the United Empire Loyalists who first settled the region.

In 1968, Loyalist College, which had previously operated out of a nearby high school, relocated to its current 200-acre (81 ha) site on Wallbridge-Loyalist Road. A few years later, the Lennox and Addington Wing, which houses the School of Technology and Retraining, was built in response to the need for additional space and creative teaching methods.

The institution collaborates with First Nations Technical Institute in the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and runs a satellite campus there in Bancroft, Ontario.
