About Yale University
Yale University is a private Ivy League research institution in In New Haven, Connecticut,. Yale University was founded in 1701 and is the third-oldest college in the country. It was one of the nine colonial colleges established before the American Revolution.
Congregationalist clergy from the Connecticut Colony founded the Collegiate School in 1701. By the time of the American Revolution, the curriculum had expanded to include the humanities and sciences after initially only teaching ministers about religion and sacred languages.
The college grew into graduate and professional education in the 19th century, conferring the first PhD in the United States in 1861, and becoming a university in 1887.
After 1890, Yale’s staff and student populations significantly increased as the school’s physical site and its scientific research programs were expanded.
The original undergraduate college, the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and twelve professional schools make up Yale’s fourteen constituent institutions. The Yale Corporation oversees the institution, but each school’s staff is in charge.
Yale School of Achitecture

The institution of Fine Arts’ Department of Architecture was founded in 1916, and the School of Art and Architecture, as it was then named, became a fully graduate professional institution in 1959.
Paul Rudolph, the chair of the department, designed the newly constructed Yale Art and Architecture Building, where the School moved in 1963 and has resided since since (now known as Rudolph Hall).
The Yale School of Architecture separated itself from other professional schools in 1972.
After undergoing a significant refurbishment and extension, the Yale Art and Architecture Building was rededicated and reopened in November 2008 by a team that includes renowned New York architect and Yale alumni Charles Gwathmey.
