About Kisumu Polytechnic
Kisumu National Polytechnic began operations in 1967 as a technical level school. The management admitted its first class of students to Sigalagala National Technical and Trade School while they waited for the completion of Kisumu Technical Secondary School, which was officially opened in 1971 by former Education Minister Dr. Taaitta Toweett.
In 1988, the Ministry upgraded the school to a Technical Training Institute with the goal of producing hands-on human resources who are proficient in the application of technical abilities. This corresponded with the nationwide implementation of the 8-4-4 school curriculum, which needed such institutions to meet the increasing demand for technical skills.
In 1996, the Ministry upgraded the Technical Training Institute to a National Polytechnic to meet the regional demand for technical capabilities. On June 21, 1997, retired President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi officially launched the new status.
On August 22, 2014, in response to Section 26 (2) of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Act of 2013, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Science and Technology issued the KISUMU NATIONAL POLYTECHNIC ORDER, 2014, with a broader scope that has given rise to the new name.
This new order required the institution to form a Governing Council and revoke Legal Notice No. 85, dated May 30, 2001, which acknowledged it as a polytechnic. The Governing Council took office in August 2015.
