Washington Adventist University is a Seventh-day Adventist liberal art University Washington Adventist University established in 1904 and operating in Takoma Park, Maryland. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools; the Adventist Accrediting Association of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists; and approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
The university offers undergraduate Associate and bachelor’s degrees, as well as several certificate programs. Graduate programs include BA, Masters of Nursing with Business Leadership, Masters in Public Administration, Masters of Religion, and Masters in Psychology. Adult evening courses towards accelerated bachelor’s degree programs are also available from the School of Graduate and Professional Services.
The campus, containing 17 buildings including residence halls, occupies 19 acres (77,000 m2) in suburban Takoma Park, MD just north of the Washington D.C. line. The student body is diverse with students attending from a reported 40 states and 47 countries. The student population is 1,493, where 1,327 are undergraduates.
Washington Adventist University co-sponsors Adventist Colleges Abroad, a program in which qualified students study overseas while completing requirements for graduation at Washington Adventist University. This language and cultural immersion are available in eight locations: Argentina, Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Spain. WAU undergraduate students may also study business courses in England through an exclusive partnership program with Newbold College just outside London, England.

Washington Adventist University Scholarships
Washington Adventist University scholarships are provided to students to help supplement the cost of attending the university. Washington Adventist University scholarships can be accessed only after Student’s have applied to the university. The chart below shows the available scholarships at Washington Adventist University
1 First Year Academic Scholarships
Academic Awards are based on a combination of cumulative high school GPA and SAT or ACT scores. Awards are renewable provided the student is enrolled full-time and remains in good academic standing.

Note: Students are eligible for the CU Merit Award if they graduate from a Seventh-Day Adventist Academy located within the Columbia Union of Seventh-Day Adventists and meet the qualifications for the Presidential Award.
2 ACT/SAT Scholarships

3 Transfer Academic Scholarships
Awards are renewable provided the student is enrolled full-time and remains in good academic standing.

4 Leadership Scholarships
The Gateway Leadership Scholarships is available to first-time WAU students in the schools of Arts and Social Sciences and Health Professions, Science and Wellness. These scholarships are not renewable. Students are eligible based on elected or appointed offices held during their Junior and/or Senior years of high school.
In order for any scholarship to be awarded, a verification letter must be received from the high school, church, or community organization stating the office held and the period of time the office was held. Scholarships here include:

Note: Students wishing to receive Church or Community Organization Leadership scholarships must meet the following criteria:
- The student must hold an elected or appointed office which duties include, but are not limited to, planning, leading or creating events and activities, coordinating the use of resources including people and funds;
- Participation in such activities a minimum of once a week.
5 Athletic Scholarship: NAIA
Recipients must try out, be selected, and participate in one of the following NAIA sports:
- Basketball – Men/Women
- Cross Country – Men/Women
- Soccer – Men/Women
- Volleyball – Women’s
6 Youth Camp/Summer Ministries Scholarship
Recipients of this scholarship must work as a youth camp or summer ministries employee at one of the Adventist youth camps or organizations. The university matches 100% of the net cash it receives from the conference up to $1,500 per academic year, disbursed one-half each semester.
7 Three-Way Scholarship
Students can apply for this scholarship by contacting their Seventh-Day Adventist Church to see if they participate in the program. If the church approves up to $500 from church funds, they then send the funds to the conference for matching funds. The Conference sends all the funds to Washington Adventist University and then WAU matches the conference portion up to $500. If the Conference does not participate, the student’s church can send $500 directly to WAU and then WAU will contribute up to $250 to the student’s student account.
General Information on Washington Adventist University Scholarships
- Institutional Scholarships will not be awarded in excess of tuition.
- Scholarships and discounts are divided and distributed equally over the fall and spring semesters. Scholarships are not applicable to summer sessions.
- Washington Adventist University Scholarships are available to full-time students taking 12 or more hours each semester.
- Washington Adventist University reserves the right to change or amend any of the scholarship policies at any time.
