ABOUT WANGARI MAATHAI:

Wangari Muta Maathai  1 April 1940 – 25 September 2011) was an internationally renowned Kenyan environmental political activist and Nobel laureate. She was educated in the United States at Mount St. Scholastica (Benedictine College) and the University of Pittsburgh, as well as the University of Nairobi in Kenya.

In 1977, Maathai founded the Green Belt Movement, an environmental non-governmental organization focused on the planting of trees, environmental conservation, and women’s rights. In 1984, she was awarded the Right Livelihood Award, and in 2004, she became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for “her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.” Maathai was an elected member of Parliament and served as assistant minister for Environment and Natural resources in the government of President Mwai Kibaki between January 2003 and November 2005. She was an Honorary Councillor of the World Future Council. She made numerous achievements, was affiliated to many professional bodies and received several awards.In 2011, Maathai died of complications from ovarian cancer.

Objectives of the Scholarship Fund:

Targeting young women between the ages of 18 to 25, the scholarships will seek to realize the following objectives:

a) Encourage passionate young women wishing to develop their professional/educational skills and talents in the field of environmental conservation, peace and advocacy as a viable career option.
b) Encourage and promote the spirit of environmentalism as propagated by the late Prof Wangari Maathai through supporting innovative ideas that contribute to sustainable development and greater climate change adaptation within urban areas, such as the City of Nairobi.

The Wangari Maathai scholarship fund is also has the primary aim of developing young people with strong values and commitment to the conservation of the physical and social environment in Kenya. The fund has been established by The Rockefeller Foundation, The Green Belt Movement and Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF).

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WANGARI MAATHAI SCHOLARSHIP FUND:

A scholarship award from the fund is given each year to a young woman who has demonstrated passion and personal commitment to environmental conservation. This individual must also demonstrate their ability to successfully mobilize people and provide leadership in environmental advocacy.

This scholarship program is usually awarded each year,In this first year, the tertiary education scholarship will be awarded to a young woman aged 18 to 25 years, who has demonstrated passion and personal commitment to environmental conservation. This individual must have also demonstrated their ability to successfully mobilize people and provide leadership in environmental advocacy.

Who can apply?

In keeping with Prof. Maathai’s vision of the Green Belt Movement’s work, applicants to this fund should explain how the environmental conservation project(s) they have started or propose to start may enhance environmental health and sustainability, and the fund’s goals of achieving a greener, cleaner and a more sustainable city.

Qualifying projects need not be limited to tree planting but may also focus on other aspects of environmental conservation and sustainability. The selected project should promote, in the target town, a continually green city that allows its inhabitants to enjoy their constitutional right to a clean and healthy environment. Supported ideas must be in line with policies and strategies of both local and national authorities such as the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA 1999), and the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA).

How can you support the Fund?

Any interested institution or individual can support the Fund. The Rockefeller Foundation, the Green Belt Movement and KCDF have created a framework on how one can take part in broadening the outreach of the fund.

  • A young woman of between the ages of 18 – 25 years.
  • Kenyan citizens currently residing in Kenya
  • The scholarship is limited to applicants who have enrolled in a KenyanUniversity
  • Ability to demonstrate the environmental conservation project(s) they have started or have been involved in and how those initiatives have impacted people in their community, in ways that have improved environmental health and sustainability, and the fund’s goals of achieving a greener, cleaner and a more sustainable community.
