Scholarship Value: $650

This year we are adding a new “Climate Change” category to the competition. Participants between the ages of 14 and 18 are invited to write an essay or create a video (see submission requirements for details) that discusses how one animal species has been affected by climate change and presents ideas to raise awareness of this species and what can be done to protect it.

Awards Available: 13

The contest is also open to ESL (English as a Second Language) students.

A) You are strongly advised to read all the rules!

B) Entrants in the 14-15 year old section are invited to write an essay that addresses either the mistreatment of one animal species or one cause of animal suffering, or the preservation of one species threatened with extinction, occurring anywhere in the world, and potential solutions to alleviate animal suffering.

C) Entrants in the 16-18 year old section must become involved in a project (new or pre-existing) that addresses either the mistreatment of one animal species or one cause of animal suffering, or the preservation of one species threatened with extinction, occurring anywhere in the world. Students must submit either 1) a written essay with accompanying photos or 2) an original video.

D) Entrants in the 14-18 year old section are invited to write an essay or create a video (see submission requirements) that addresses the impact of climate change on the animal population and discusses how one animal species has been affected by climate change and presents ideas to raise awareness of this species and what can be done to protect it. According to the World Wildlife Fund as many as 100 million species may coexist with us on the planet. It is estimated that 10,000 to 100,000 of those species go extinct each year. In many cases climate change is a contributing factor. Please note: Entries should focus on how climate change affects a particular species rather than on climate change in general. We also encourage you to think beyond the obvious choices when selecting your topic. (Polar bears, for example, are commonly-albeit justifiably-discussed in connection with climate change, but many other species are affected, as well.)

E) Active Involvement Projects

All entrants in the 16-18 year old sections must become involved in a project (new or pre-existing) which addresses one of the following anywhere in the world:

A) The mistreatment of one animal species

B) One cause of animal suffering

C) The preservation of one species threatened with extinction

Projects should be worked on for at least two to three months and the project should have a direct impact on animals by means of either direct or indirect intervention. Your submission will document your project and your contribution to that project and, where possible, show how your project/involvement could alleviate animal suffering.
