The University of Texas is delighted to offer a year Energy Journalism Fellowship to an early-career energy journalist with up to 10 years’ experience for the academic year 2017-2018. Successful applicants will work on long-form energy writing projects of their choosing in proximity to UT Austin’s 300+ renowned energy experts.

The goal of this Fellowship to serve as a sabbatical that provides recipients time to work on their writing project without the pressure of daily deadlines and other burdens, the Fellowship does require recipients to fulfil certain obligations.

The University of Texas at Austin, informally UT Austin, UT, University of Texas, or Texas in sports contexts, is a public research university and the flagship institution of the University of Texas System. The institution has the nation’s seventh-largest single-campus enrollment, with over 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students and over 24,000 faculties and staff.

 Scholarship Award:  Research Fellow recipients will earn an annual salary of $65,000 with benefits as authorized by the Texas legislature.  Fellows also will have a travel budget of $3500 to work on their book or another project, will be issued a laptop computer for the duration of the Fellowship, will have the full library and internet access, and will be provided workspaces at either the Energy Institute or the School of Law.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for this fellowship:

  • Be recognized as a credentialed journalist with a solid body of published work in energy / environmental science;
  • Have up to 10 years’ experience working for a prominent regional, national or international news outlet;
  • Submit a detailed outline or treatment of a major work in the field of energy / environmental science, such as a book or screenplay;
  • Be willing and able to take a year off from current position; and
  • Agree to fulfil obligations during one-year fellowship (details below).

Nationality: U.S citizens can apply for this fellowship.
