University of the People (UoPeople) is an private American non-profit distance learning institution of higher education that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. It was established in 2009 by Shai Reshef, an entrepreneur.

It has an online campus and a student base of 15,000 this year from over 200 countries. The university is located at Pasadena, California, United States an has an official website at UoPeople.edu. University of the People is a nationally accredited by DEAC in 2014 and approved by BPPE.

With it’s groundbreaking online learning model and instructors from the world’s foremost academic volunteers, UoPeople offers students the opportunity to pursue and attain a high quality and invaluable American degree.

The university offers both a two-year associate and a four-year bachelor’s degree programs in business administration, computer science, and health science, as well as an MBA program.

UoPeople has rapidly gained recognition in the international space of online tertiary education and also has the support of leading academics from renowned universities around the world.

The university has partnered with Yale ISP Law School for research and New York University, University of California Berkeley and the University of Edinburgh to accept students. UoPeople is also affiliated with the UN, UNESCO, and Ashoka, among other international organizations.

The University of the People, Bachelors Degree programme for this year starts 15 Nov 2018 and the deadline for registration is 4 Oct 2018.

The admission process is administered in 5 terms annually. Because of its use of volunteers, Open Educational Resources, open-source technology, and peer-to-peer learning, UoPeople remains tuition-free.

Over 6,000 professionals have volunteered to tutor at the university, filling for key leadership positions in the university including UoPeople President, Provost, Academic Deans, Course Developers, Academic Advisers, and Course Instructors.

The University of the People is the first worldwide tuition-free university with online classes and virtual textbooks. Therefore students are not charged for their educational instruction, course materials, or annual enrollment.

But students are required to pay some administrative fees which include processing fees for applications and final exam assessments. Students who cannot afford the administrative costs can apply for scholarships if they are eligible.

UoPeople works with top corporations and organizations to provide grants and scholarships. The university currently offers several options to assist students in need of financial aid. These funds are designed to meet the unique and diverse needs of its students.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the University of the People offers scholarships for refugees.

UoPeople is currently building a new sustainable model for higher education in which students are asked to pay only a $100 assessment fee at the end of each course; for students who may find these modest fees prohibitive, the university offers a variety of scholarships including the;

Simone Biles Legacy Scholarship Fund which is open to all students, with priority for those who have been in foster care, Emergency Refugee Assistance Scholarship Fund for refugees and asylum seekers, Foundation Hoffmann Scholarship which is open to all students.

The university charges a nominal $60 Application Processing Fee for all applicants as well as a $100 Exam Processing Fee for each exam ($200 for the MBA). Based on this, an associate’s degree can be completed in 2 years for $2060, a bachelor degree can be completed in 4 years for $4060, and an MBA can be completed in 15 months for $2460.

Requirements for Undergraduate Degree Programs at UoPeople

As a fully accredited online University, UoPeople has a number of requirements for it’s potential applicants to maintain a strong and intellectual student body.

The admission requirements include; applicants to be 16 years old or older, capable of demonstrating high school completion and have proficiency in English.

Applicants who are non-native English speakers, or did not complete their high school education in an institution where the primary language of instruction is English, are required to provide proof of English proficiency.

Should applicants be unable to provide proof of English proficiency, they will need to successfully complete an UoPeople English course before proceeding to UoPeople Foundations. To formally apply for admissions consideration to UoPeople, applicants must complete an online application.

And once eligible to begin studies at UoPeople, applicants are required to submit a payment of a non-refundable Application Processing Fee.

UoPeople does not require a standardized entrance exam for admittance. Therefore, entrance exams are not required for admission meaning, there is no need to submit any standardized test scores in order to be accepted to the online degree program offered at UoPeople in Business Administration, Computer Science or Health Science.

Also in order to be admitted to an undergraduate degree program, students must successfully complete the UoPeople Foundations Courses. The UoPeople Foundations Courses are designed to equip students with the necessary skills needed to thrive in their various academic degree studies.

Once students have successfully passed the UoPeople Foundations Courses and sent their proof of high school completion document, they may continue as Degree Seeking Students at UoPeople in their desired undergraduate degree program.

The UoPeople Foundations Courses count among the associate’s and bachelor’s degree credit requirements.

Submitting proof of high school completion may be satisfied during the first term of study at UoPeople through the submission of an official diploma (or transcript showing graduation) sent directly to UoPeople (either mailed or submitted online)

or a photocopy of the original diploma (or transcript showing graduation) certified by a notary sent directly to UoPeople (either mailed or submitted online) or the results from an Ability to Benefit test approved by the US Department of Education, if an applicant, such as a refugee or asylum seeker is unable to provide the documents listed above.

Application documents are to be uploaded online directly via the UoPeople Self-Service Portal for faster processing and can be accessed once you have completed your application to the university and paid your application fee.

For applicants who wish to send their documents to the Office of Admissions in Pasadena, California, must send it to the school’s official address at;

University of the People (Office of Admissions), 225 S. Lake Ave. Suite 300. Pasadena, CA. 91101. Documents that are not written in the English language must be submitted along with an official notarized translation. The original, as well as the English version, must be sent to the UoPeople admission office.

UoPeople also accepts official post-secondary credentials for admissions consideration such as Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees. All submitted documents become the property of University of the People, and will not be returned so applicants should ensure to make multiple copies of submitted documents.

Requirements for Master’s Degree in Business Administration

To meet admission requirements, applicants need to have; English proficiency (international students must meet English proficiency requirements according to the DEAC guidelines for graduate study.

If unable to demonstrate English Proficiency, then the applicant will be required to complete English Composition 1 course in their first term, before continuing to study in the foundation courses), a minimum of two years work experience, One reference (from an employer/lecturer etc.) and an official bachelor’s degree transcript.

To apply for admission to our MBA program, applicants must complete an online application including payment of a non-refundable Application Processing Fee.

Once applicants complete their online application, they will be considered for admission to the UoPeople Foundations Courses and must successfully complete the UoPeople MBA Foundations Courses to be admitted into a graduate program.

Once students have successfully passed the UoPeople MBA Foundations Courses and sent their proof of Bachelor’s degree completion document, they may continue as a Degree Seeking Students at UoPeople in their MBA degree program.

The UoPeople MBA Foundations Courses count among the MBA degree credit requirements. Proof of undergraduate degree completion may be satisfied during the first term at UoPeople through the submission of an official diploma (or transcript showing graduation) sent directly to UoPeople (either mailed, submitted online or a scanned copy sent electronically)

or a photocopy of the original diploma (or transcript showing graduation) certified by a notary sent directly to UoPeople (either mailed or submitted online) or results of an Ability to Benefit test, for those who are unable to produce original diplomas/and or transcripts, such as Refugees and Asylum- Seekers.

Applicants are to submit a resume showing at least two years of work experience, a Letter of Recommendation from one individual who can write knowledgeably about their academic background and/or work experience.

The letter should be formally written and addressed to the UoPeople Office of Admissions. The letter should be submitted with the recommender’s first and last name, email address, and phone number including the country code.

It is advised that applicants send their documents electronically via the UoPeople Self-Service Portal for the fast processing of their application.

It is important to verify that all the appropriate documents are included and ensure to have multiple copies of each personal records as all submitted documents become the property of University of the People.

Documents, Diplomas, and transcripts that are not written in the English language must be submitted along with an official notarized translation.

The original, as well as the English version, must be sent to UoPeople and in certain cases, the Office of Admissions may require applicants to present additional documentation.

University of the People considers a transfer of credits earned at accredited universities within and outside of the U.S. UoPeople also considers credits earned from College Board AP tests or evaluated by ACE (including CLEP).

UoPeople will consider transfer credit for a course whose content is equivalent to the course may be used towards elective credit in a UoPeople degree program.

UoPeople may award the transfer of up to 50% of the required program credits. With the university’s new transfer credit acceptance policy, you can study 50% of this degree while you’re still in high school.

For Associate’s Degree, 30 credits can be transferred and for a Bachelor’s Degree, 60 credits can be transferred. However, it is unlikely to transfer course credit out of a particular UoPeople course program into a different program.

University of the People has five 10-week terms in its academic year and tests are taken online in the last week of the term. The University offers both internship and mentorship programs by leading professionals in their fields.

A personal Program Advisor is assigned to each student to assist with any problems that might occur. The University of the People’s faculty is led by professors and distinguished professionals in their industries. UoPeople tutors offer a high-quality setting to the virtual classroom, providing their industry-based expertise.

The Bachelor’s and Associate’s Degrees in Computer Science are accredited online degree pleading, providing students with in-depth knowledge and analytic skills associated with the field of IT and Computer Science.

The Bachelor’s and Associate’s Degrees in Health Science emphasizes teaching the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to function in today’s complex and evolving healthcare environment.

At University of the People accredited online degree programs in Business Administration, Computer Science and Health Science, as well as an MBA program, are offered.

All learning materials and textbooks at the University of the People are Open Education Resources (OER), which are free collections of academic and research texts for teaching and learning.

UoPeople courses are built using reading assignments and other OER materials carefully selected by the university’s instructors and course developers.

These free resources expose the students to a wide range of courses that will support and enhances their studies at University of the People. Students also engage with one another through online discussion forums and peer-to-peer reviews thanks to the university’s strong online community.

The students participate in a system of peer assessments through grading and reviewing classmates’ work.

The final grade is based on a combination of peer-graded work, instructor-graded work, graded quizzes, and a final exam.

All students are assigned a program advisor at the beginning of their course of study at UoPeople, to help students succeed in their degree programs. Each academic term lasts for nine weeks and has eight learning units every week.

The learning week starts on Thursday morning and ends the following Wednesday. The weekly study units are made available at the start of the new learning week. Each course is 9 weeks long and comprises 8 units of study (one per week).

For undergraduate degree programs, the students take a test in the 9th week on material covered in the course. Students will be provided with self-administered quizzes to help understand course material and prepare for tests.

Every course assigns a weekly reading assignment and discussion assignment (to be completed in the group forum). Some weeks, students have a written assignment/activity or a programming assignment (depending on the course of study).

Students communicate with their instructors through the learning journal and via email, messaging.
