University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Located in the United States, The University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign (also referred to as the University of Illinois or simply UIUC) is a public research university in Illinois, United States state.

Founded in 1867 as Illinois Industrial University and located on 601 E John Street, Champaign, the university with its major campuses in the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign is the principal institution of the University of Illinois System in the US state of Illinois, and one of 37 public universities established on the basis of a land grant during President Abraham Lincoln’s era.

It’s sister universities in the University of Illinois System are the University of Illinois–Chicago and the University of Illinois–Springfield.

This system of public universities in Illinois is home to more than 83,700 students spread across its 3 campuses and 36 colleges and has an endowment of $5.6 billion.

UIUC’s over 45,000 student population comprises of more than 32,000 undergraduate and over 12,000 graduate students from all 50 states of the United States and over 100 countries, with mainland Chinese students making up the majority (about 50 percent) of its over 10,000 international student population.

The University’s campus library system which consists of over 20 departmental libraries and divisions and more than 24 million items are regarded as the second-largest university library in the United States, only behind Harvard University.

UIUC boasts of having the fastest supercomputer (the petascale blue waters) on a university campus and the campus research park has served as an innovation center for companies such as Yahoo, Capital One, Dow, State Farm, Caterpillar, and several other start-up companies along with several inventions like the LED, plasma screen and the integrated circuit.

The university is also home to over 1,500 active registered student organizations and a Greek System which comprises of 59 fraternities and 38 sororities on campus.

30 Nobel laureates, 22 Pulitzer Prize winners, and founders of multinational corporations have been affiliated with the university as either alumni, faculty members, or researchers.

Notable among them include the likes of John Barden, the only person to have won two Nobel prizes in physics, doing so in 1956 and 1972.

YouTube, co-founders Steve Chen and Jawed Karim; PayPal co-founders Luke Nosek and Max Levchin; Tesla co-founder, Martin Eberhard, among several others.

University of Illinois Ranking

The University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign is among the top Universities in the United States and is also regarded as one of the highly-rated higher education institutions in the world.

It is regarded as the 35th best higher education institution in the US by the Washington Monthly Report and as the 69th best by Forbes.

It also comes in at number 52 among the nation’s Top 100 tertiary institutions according to the US news and world report while the Academic Ranking of World’s Universities (ARWU) ranks it among the Top 30 schools in the nation, coming in at #26 on the list.

From a global perspective, Times/WSJ ranks UIUC as #37 in its list of world’s top schools. Prominent World University Rankings Publisher, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranks it as the world’s number 71 university.

GW also comes in as #47 on the US News and World Report’s ranking of the world’s best universities and it is placed in the top 50 range of world’s universities on the ARWU rankings, coming in as the 37th Best University in the world.

U of I Admissions, Acceptance Rate, and Tuition

The university offers more than 150 undergraduate and 100 graduate and professional programs which are spread across the following 18 schools and colleges; Agriculture, Consumer,  Environmental Sciences, Fine and Applied Arts, Engineering, Medicine, Library and Information Science, Applied Health Sciences, Law, Education, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Gies College of Business, Media, Social Work, Aviation, Labor and Employment Relations, Veterinary Medicine, and the Carle-Illinois College of Medicine which was recently created in 2015.

UIUC is regarded by U.S. News & World Report to have a “more selective” admissions process which differs between the different schools and colleges in the university; the School of Social Work has the lowest ranges with its ACT range at 24–27 and its SAT range is 1150–1350, while the College of Engineering has the highest ranges with an ACT range of 31–34, and the SAT (no writing) is 1400–1520, making it the most selective college.

On an average of the various schools and colleges, the University of Illinois has an acceptance rate of 60 percent, an SAT range of 1285-1480, and ACT range of 26-32.

Tuitions at UIUC are $15,054 (In-state) and $30,214 (Out-state) through addition of room and board which is $11,308 takes the total fees to $26,362 and $41,522 respectively.

The university however offers financial aid in the form of grants and/or scholarships and the average cost of tuition and fees after aid is $16,683.

The application deadline for applying to the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign is Dec. 1, the early decision deadline is Nov. 1. Deadline for international applicants is Jan. 2.

University of Illinois Distance learning

UIUC also partners with the educational technology company Course era to offer a series of online master’s degrees such as the Master of Business Administration, the Master of Computer Science in Data Science, and the Master of Science in Accountancy.

These online masters programs offered by The University of Illinois through Coursera also have strict admission requirements similar to the university’s regular on-campus admission policies. All applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and have earned a 3.0 GPA or higher in the last two years of study.

University of Illinois Football

The sports and athletic teams that represent the University of Illinois are known as the Fighting Illini. They compete in the NCAA’s Division I, fielding teams for ten men’s and eleven women’s varsity sports.

The Memorial Stadium for football is the ground upon which the Fighting Illini football team plays all their home games.

The unranked football team who defeated the University of Chicago Maroons 3-0 in what they claim to be the first homecoming game has also gone on to upset the then-ranked No. 1 Ohio State football team away at the Ohio Stadium in 2007.

Due to its large number of Chinese international students, the University in 2015 began the broadcast of its American football games in Mandarin also.

University of Illinois–Chicago

Founded in 1965, the University of Illinois–Chicago (UIC), a public research university located on 1200 W Harrison St, Chicago, Illinois, USA, is the second largest of the University of Illinois system with a total undergraduate enrollment of 17,959 students and over 11,000 postgraduate students.

The campus comprises of more than 200 student clubs and organizations, including a large Greek system with several fraternities and sororities.

The University of Illinois at Chicago offers 83 bachelor’s degrees, 93 master’s degrees, and 64 doctoral degrees to its over 29,000 students spread across 15 colleges, in addition to the university’s specialized undergraduate Honors College and the omnibus Graduate College.

UIC utilizes a semester-based academic calendar and students are allowed, each spring, to present the findings of research projects they carried out with faculties at the university’s student Research forum as part of the UIC Undergraduate Research Experience.

The Carnegie Foundation recognizes UIC as one of the American universities with the highest research classification (RU/VH) and it is also home to the largest medical school in the United States.

The University of Illinois at Chicago is among the top Universities in the United States and is also one of the highly-rated higher education institutions in the world. It is regarded as the 65th best higher education institution in the US by the Washington Monthly Report and as the 340th best by Forbes.

It also comes in at number 152 among the nation’s Top 200 tertiary institutions according to the US news and world report.

From a global perspective, Times/WSJ ranks UIC as #200 in its list of world’s top schools.

Prominent World University Rankings Publisher, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranks it as the world’s number 187 university.

GW also comes in as #174 on the US News and World Report’s ranking of the world’s best universities and it is placed in the 201-300 range of world’s universities on the ARWU rankings.

The athletics teams representing UIC are known as the Flames and they compete in NCAA Division I Horizon League in sports such as soccer, gymnastics, basketball, baseball, among others. The Flames baseball team won seven straight Horizon League Championships between 2001 and 2010.

Tuitions at UIC are $14,816 (In-state) and $27,672 (Out-state) though addition of room and board which is $10,882 takes the total fees to $25,698 and $38,554 respectively. The university however offers financial aid in the form of grants and/or scholarships and the average cost of tuition and fees after aid is $14K.

University of Illinois –Springfield

The University of Illinois –Springfield (UIS) is a public university in Springfield, Illinois, United States.

The university was established in 1969 and was initially known as the Sangamon State University until 1995 when it became a part of the University of Illinois system. It is the newest member of the University of Illinois system and is located on One William Maxwell Ln, Springfield, Illinois 62703, USA.

UIS has more than 80 organizations on campus and the university’s athletic teams, comprising of 16 varsity sports teams, are known as the Prairie Stars. The Prairie stars compete in the NCAA Division II’s Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).

The US News & world report ranks the University of Illinois at Springfield as the #64 in Regional Universities Midwest. It’s in-state and out-state tuition and fees are $11,423 and $20,948 respectively.
