Newcastle University, which is officially known as the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. It is located in the North East of England and is a public research university in Newcastle upon Tyne.
The origin of this tertiary institution is traced to a School of Medicine and Surgery which was later known as the College of Medicine, founded in 1834, and to the College of Physical Science which was later renamed Armstrong College), established in 1871.
The College of Medicine and the Armstrong College came together to form one division of the federal University of Durham, with the Durham Colleges having the other formed. Following an Act of Parliament, King’s College became the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1963.
