MacArthur Foundation Fellowship 2019-2020
The MacArthur Foundation offers the MacArthur Fellowship program to celebrate and inspire the creative potential of individuals through no-strings-attached fellowships.
Also known as the MacArthur Genius Grant, the MacArthur Fellowship is a five-year grant for people who are exceptionally creative in their work and looking for new opportunities. They are looking for thought-provoking and practical people who raise new questions, commitment or behaviour.
MacArthur Foundation Fellowship is designed to give beneficiaries the opportunity to carry out their own artistic, intellectual and professional activities in the absence of specific obligations or reports.
MacArthur is one of the largest independent foundations in the US. It helps creative people, effective institutions and networks of influence to build a more just, green and peaceful world.
MacArthur Foundation Fellowship is open to residents and citizens of the United States.
How to Apply
The MacArthur Fellowship program does not accept applications or unsolicited nominations. Anonymous and confidential nominations are invited by the Foundation and reviewed by an anonymous and confidential selection committee of about a dozen people. The committee reviews all nominees and recommends recipients to the president and board of directors.
Most new Fellows first learn of their nomination and award upon receiving a congratulatory phone call.
However, there are three criteria for selecting Fellows: exceptional creativity, promises of major breakthroughs based on a remarkable track record, and the potential for the fellowship to facilitate future creative work.
There are no restrictions on becoming a Fellow, except that the proposed candidates must be US residents or citizens and must not hold any electoral or advanced government positions within the meaning of the Statute.
Normally, between 20 and 25 recipients are chosen each year. The MacArthur Fellowship currently sets aside a fixed sum of $625,000 which is paid in quarterly instalments over five years to the recipients.
There is no fixed deadline for the MacArthur Genius Grant as it varies.
