Le Rosey School was established in 1880 and at first only allowed young men to enroll in classes. Mixed education was authorized in 1967, and now both boys and girls are able to attend.

What language is used for learning at Le Rosey School?

Le Rosey School Academics

Le Rosey’s approach to education is holistic as a boarding school with robust sports, arts, and service programs, but academic expectations and success lay at the center of everything we do.

They demand high standards, which are supported by modern teaching techniques, facilities, and rigor, and, most importantly, bilingual and bicultural programs.

School Curriculum

Le Rosey offers a rigorous bilingual and bicultural education with French or English as the primary language of instruction depending on the student’s academic program. The academic curriculum of Institut Le Rosey is created to “provide education of breadth, depth, and quality for an international student body.”

Her curriculum is worldwide with the breadth and depth typical of the strongest national and international programmes with a strong emphasis on languages. Rosey students are diverse in both what they know and how they have learned.

The juniors, the Cadets, the Junior Seniors, and the Seniors are the four phases of a comprehensive Rosey education.

Junior students at Le Rosey follow the Primary Bilingual Programme from Class 9 (US 3rd grade) through Class 7, which is based on the French national curriculum for classes taught in French and the British national curriculum for classes taught in English, both of which are complemented by the International Primary Curriculum to create an international education.

At Le Rosey School, the learning process is organized into three phases:

8–11-year-olds in the Primary Bilingual Program
Program for Secondary Language Learners (12–16 Years)
International Baccalaureate (IB) or French Baccalaureate (16–18 years old, prerequisite for college admission).

Language

Children are divided into groups according to their linguistic proficiency levels for better mastery of the material and higher achievement, effective learning.

Children in primary and secondary schools are taught bilingually, that is, they study English and French equally intensively and lessons are taught in both languages.

However, English and French continue to be studied by every student, and in addition to them, one more foreign language is added that is also required to be studied.

High school students can choose for themselves a more preferred language, and classes are reformulated according to the new parameter.

Bilingualism and Biculturalism

In order to give all students the opportunity to learn in both languages, English and French have been the official languages of teaching at Le Rosey for well over a century.

Most subjects are studied in either French or English by Roséens as their primary language of instruction.

Programs in French and English are offered in a way that challenges everyone: literature and language for the most advanced students, and foreign language programs for those whose proficiency ranges from beginner to advance.

Students who choose a completely bilingual program earn a Le Rosey Bilingual Diploma at the conclusion of the Pre-Bacc program. All students are personally counseled on their choices. As soon as they are able.

Since approximately 30 distinct mother tongue languages are taught at Le Rosey, it could be more acceptable to refer to trilingual studies since more than half of the Rosey students do not speak English or French as their first language.

Academic Standards

Every student, without exception, must pursue rigorous academic paths that lead to either an academic série of the French baccalauréat or the entire diploma of the International Baccalaureate (in English, French, or both).

The average grade is 35 points (world average 30), over two-thirds of students receive a bilingual IB diploma (more than double the world average), and over 60% of students receive mentions.

Over the last five years, the pass rate for the French bac has been 100% (and over 60% of students have obtained mentions), while 98% of our International Baccalaureate cohort have obtained the full IB diploma – against a world average of about 80%.

All pupils continue on to college, and more than 30% of those go to institutions that are among the top 25 in the world, including Oxbridge and other Russell Group colleges in the UK and the Ivy League, MIT, Stanford, and “Ivy League Plus” in the US.

Le Rosey School Class Size

One of the special benefits of boarding school life is, of course, the opportunity to see teachers outside of class. Roséens benefit from close attention to their needs and interests as well as a special relationship with members of our teaching faculty.

Le Rosey only hires highly trained employees, but does not adhere to a one-size-fits-all teaching philosophy. With an international teaching staff, one would expect teaching styles and approaches to differ – and they do.

All teachers are encouraged to be unique and to love being in the classroom because we believe that enthusiastic and committed teaching leads to excellent learning. Teachers are routinely evaluated and given chances for professional development.

Le Rosey Facilities

Le Rosey School is home to a sizable library, auditoriums that are roomy and bright and are outfitted with all the essential tools, a contemporary computer lab, and a well-developed sports infrastructure that includes both indoor and outdoor facilities.

Gstaad Campus

Here is an overview of Gstaad, the site of Le Rosey’s winter campus, which is in the Bernese Oberland.

The school’s winter campus is located in the town of Gstaad, a ski resort in the Bernese Oberland, and is made up of a number of traditional chalets.

A 10-minute train trip from Gstaad, the Schönried campus for girls is made up of five chalets used only for boarding and meals.

In 2015, Christophe Gudin, the son of Le Rosey’s fourth director Philippe Gudin, became the school’s fifth director. Kim Kovacevic is the headmaster.

Le Rosey School Tuition

Without additional expenses like those for sports, etc., the annual boarding and academic costs are CHF 125,000 (about US$133,000) as of 2021/2022.

Scholarships are made available to “particularly deserving” students by the Rosey Foundation, which is responsible for managing the funding of Le Rosey’s Carnal Hall. The four-member Rosey Scholarship Committee distributes the scholarships to the selected students.

However, because scholarships are solely offered through the Rosey Foundation, Institut Le Rosey does not directly provide any scholarships to anyone.

Le Rosey Accommodation and meal

Students are housed in a welcoming and comfortable apartment complex that is adjacent to the school.

Students often live in double rooms, which are identical across the house and are provided with all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. The rooms are spacious and bright.

In the residence, there is a senior teacher who is on duty around-the-clock: he controls the safety of students, is always available to answer their questions, resolve disputes and difficulties, and monitors the observance of cleanliness, order, and discipline. Bathrooms are located on each floor (students are provided with bedding and towels).

In the large communal dining room, a full board (three times a day) meal is served. The ration primarily consists of traditional French cuisine, as well as Asian food and specialties.

There are always vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, and dairy items on the table, and the nutrition is well-balanced and completely fits all of the demands of schoolchildren.

A special diet, vegetarian, or other food produced in accordance with the doctor’s order for the specific student may be made available upon request.

Le Rosey School Extracurricular Activities

On the basis of the school, there are a huge number of groups, sections, and studios based on hobbies – more than 20 – and the school pays great attention to not only academic, but also artistic, sports, and leisure and recreation program preparation.

Le Rosey Entry Enrolment requirements

The institution’s policy towards international students also contributes to the high level of competition: from each country, no more than 40 students per year are admitted, so you should take care of your admission in advance, 2-3 years before the expected start of classes.
