Howard University is a private, federally chartered historically black university in Washington, D.C. Howard Need and Merit-Based Scholarship
Specifically, Howard University remains committed to supporting our students and their academic efforts by awarding more than $106 million annually in scholarships and grants. Students receive a variety of scholarships based on merit, each with their own criteria. Some are unique scholarships, while they can renew others if the student meets the pre-set criteria.
In addition, Howard University has not canceled any scholarships for students who meet the eligibility requirements:
Before receiving assistance, each student receiving merit-based assistance receives and must sign a “Scholarship Acceptance Statement” that specifies what they must do to maintain their eligibility for the award next year. The appeal process is a privilege that extends to some institutional scholarships, but not all. The scholarship acceptance statement indicates whether they will allow calls for the scholarship they will grant to a student.
On May 30, 2019, they will send early renewal offer letters to students regarding their attendance based on the merits and needs of Howard University. The letter stated that offers based on merit and need depended on the academic history of the researcher after the presentation of semester qualifications.
Scholarship Transfer Program
Brief Description
Howard University recognizes that the first choice of a college student sometimes does not work. To attract talented students interested in transferring from other universities, they developed the Howard University Transfer Scholarship.
These scholarships are offered on a competitive basis, and each year a limited number of scholarships are awarded to transferred students. In fact, students must hold at least 3.25 and have at least 30 hours for the referral.
Recipients of this award receive a $10,000 grant for the first semester as long as they register with Howard University. The scholarship is not renewable.
Howard Trustee Scholarships
Brief Description
Howard University offers a number of scholarships that are awarded solely for its merit. To participate in these scholarships, students must have an average of at least 3.0%, be registered full-time with Howard and need financial resources.
Some of these awards are available at all Howard University colleges and schools. To apply, students must go to their school or college to determine the application process, selection, and other required information.

The Frederick Douglass Scholarship Program
Brief Description
This scholarship was created to attract new Ph.D. students. Only those students who show a strong academic promise will be considered for this scholarship. On average, students must be at least 3.5 years old and enroll in one of Howard’s doctoral programs.
Applicants must also be able to show an interest in university education. The scholarship allows students to receive a total of $15,000 per year for a maximum of five years. Thus, the applicant could receive a total of $75,000 from this scholarship.
In addition to the scholarship, an additional US $1,000 will be awarded each year to support the student’s research. Each recipient receives a full study discount.
Recipients also receive faculty supervision and specific activities to improve their teaching. All students must be present full time.

How Do I Qualify For A Scholarship?
The Howard University Freshman Scholarship (HUFS) Program is designed to assist accepted First-Time-in-College students. Especially those who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement throughout their secondary school career and have chosen to attend Howard University.
Scholarships are automatically awarded on a first-come, first-served, basis to eligible candidate. A separate application is NOT required. Scholarships are awarded until all the funds have been exhausted and not all eligible applicants will receive a scholarship.
