About Great Minds Initiative
The Great Minds Initiative is a 3 to 6-month internship competition at one of IBM’s research labs in Zurich, Nairobi or Johannesburg for students from Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It offers students a unique opportunity to work with world-class scientists in the industry’s leading IT research organization.
The Great Minds Internships will take place in 2019. The exact start time and duration will be defined individually with the selected students, taking into account their academic commitments and the availability of IBM employees.
IBM Research has been running Great Minds courses for over ten years. The experiences on both sides have been very positive. This program also benefits faculty members when Great Minds laureates provide their universities or departments with valuable insights into real industry issues, advanced IBM technology, and IBM Research contacts.

In keeping with their close ties to universities, IBM is looking for the best brains and the hottest IT and social challenges for internships at IBM Research. IBM will pay the winners a lump sum towards travel expenses as well as compensation that covers adequately the cost of living in Switzerland, Ireland, Kenya or South Africa, respectively. IBM will also obtain the necessary visa and work permits for the successful candidates.
The number of offers in Great Minds Internships was not specified
The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:
- The students must have a solid command of the English language in both written and spoken form.
- IBM is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from both genders as well as minority groups.

The CV must contain:
- Information according to the guidelines for the creation of a CV.
- Three search areas from the list of topics in order of priority.
- Possible start dates and duration of your internship: 3-6 months.
Your CV must include personal information (name, address, telephone number, email address), your training, the completion date, your skills, and your professional experience. Please also include all the awards and acknowledgments you have received, as well as any other activity that you consider important for a position in the industry.

The position paper (1-2 pages) should refer to the following points:
- What are the most interesting and relevant applications in your areas of interest (selected from the list of topics)?
- In your opinion, what are the main technical challenges of these applications?
- What do you personally want to achieve in these areas?
- What would you like to do during an internship at IBM Research?
This is not a quiz – there is no right or wrong answer. We recommend that you express your own points of view and propose creative and innovative ideas that can be translated into concrete projects.
Read the research areas of IBM Research – Zurich and Africa Labs to understand the projects you could work on. However, you do not need to focus on these areas when writing your summary document.
Participants must be nominated by a faculty member. A recommendation letter from a faculty member is mandatory.

- Send your CV and your position paper (in English, PDF format) to your teacher before February 25, 2019.
IBM University Relations Directors from participating countries and a committee of IBM technical experts review applications received from faculty, from which they can select the best candidates at their discretion. You will be notified by the end of April 2019 if you are one of the winners.
The laureates will begin their internship in 2019 on a date agreed upon. Do not forget to suggest in your CV the possible dates and duration (3-6 months) of your internship.
The deadline for submission is February 25, 2019.
