#1. VLIR-OUS Masters (ICP) and Training Scholarships by the Belgium government for African and developing countries

VLIR-UOS offers scholarships to students from Uganda and other developing countries in Africa and around the world so they can pursue a training and master’s program in Belgium. Annually, VLIR-UOS awards about 150-180 scholarships to fresh master’s students and about 70 scholarships to training participants.

These scholarships have been known to cover all related expenses. The master’s programmes which normally last for about one to two academic years have been designed to focus on specific problems and real needs of developing countries.

The programmes are designed to empower the students to share and apply the acquired knowledge in their home institution and country.

Host Nationality:

This scholarship is hosted in Belgium by the VLIR-UOS commission in collaboration with other host universities.

Eligible Nationality:

The VLIR-UOS masters and training scholarship is open to residents and nationals of Uganda.

#2. VLIR-UOS Oceans and Lakes masters Scholarship program for developing countries

The Ocean and Lakes Scholarship Programme is an educational sponsorship programme offered by a network of three universities in Belgium; Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB, Free University of Brussel), Universiteit Antwerp (University of Antwerp) and Universiteit Gent (University of Ghent).

These network of universities provide their students with the basic and core knowledge needed to foster scientific research and management of maritime and lacustrine systems.

The programme employs a multifaceted approach which addresses physical, chemical, geological, ecological and societal aspects and as well nature and sustainable development.

The major goal for this program is to enable students and candidates from Uganda and other developing countries to build capacity, amass knowledge, and also gain the necessary experiences required for sustainable development in their home countries.

This programme is not for students who are yet to pursue or are currently pursuing an undergraduate programme. It is for those have already acquired a Bachelors degree and are set to pursue a masters programme. This program is a master’s level programme.

VLIR-UOS scholarships are usually hosted by a network of universities in Belgium in collaboration with the Belgian government.

#3. SUSDEV Masters Scholarships for students from developing countries- KU Leuven

The SusDev Masters Scholarships have been specially designed to fund and empower students who desire to make milestone impacts in their communities.

This scholarship trains these students and equips them with the necessary leadership skills, knowledge and methodologies required to address inter-related socio-ecological challenges militating the smooth running of sustainable developments.

Level:

This is a scholarship opportunity available to masters students only.

#4. Science @ Leuven Masters Scholarships for International students

#5. Hasselt University Masters Scholarship Program for students from developing countries

The Hasselt University Masters Scholarship program is one of the numerous Belgium scholarships provided for Ugandans. It is one of VLIR-UOS scholarship programmes available to Ugandan students and may be available to other developing countries in Africa too.

Only masters students can apply for this opportunity.

This scholarship is hosted and taken in Belgium.

#6. Global Minds Doctoral Scholarship program for students in developing countries-KU Leuven

The Global Minds Doctoral Scholarship Program is one of the Belgium sponsorship programs for Ugandans. Every academic year the KU Leuven selects exceptional students from developing countries as scholarship candidates to obtain their PhD from the largest university of Belgium.

This is part of their input in building capacity among students from developing countries.

The main aim of the scholarship is to give students the opportunity to conduct PhD research in a ‘sandwich’ system, which means that 50% of the research takes place at KU Leuven and 50% at the home institution of the scholar, supported by a local co-promoter.

Level/Host Nationality:

This programme is a PhD degree program hosted, taken and awarded by the KU Leuven Belgium. KU Leuven is situated about twenty kilometres from Brussels, the capital of both Belgium and Europe.

It is the oldest university of the Low Countries. As such, it has a long-standing tradition of hospitality towards students and scholars from abroad. Currently, almost 7,000 international students (about 15% of the total number of students at KU Leuven) have found their home away from home in Leuven.

Applications have been invited by the Katholieke University for students residing and nationalizing in Uganda and other developing countries.

This is in efforts to foster and advance sustainable development in their country of origin. This scholarship is usually available to only 12 participants yearly and lasts for a period of 1 to 2 years.

Level:

This scholarship is only available to master students.

Host Nationality:

It is hosted and taken at the Katholieke University Belgium.

Eligible Nationality:

Only students who are residents and nationals of Uganda are eligible to apply. Other developing countries may also be eligible.

Worth of scholarship:

This is a fully-funded scholarship as it covers the full duration of the programme.

#8. KU Leuven PhD Scholarships for students from developing countries

Applications have been invited by the Katholieke University for students who wish to pursue a doctoral degree, residing and nationalizing in Uganda and other developing countries.

This is in efforts to foster and advance sustainable development in their country of origin. This scholarship is usually available to only 5 participants yearly and lasts for a period of 1 to 4 years.

Level:

This scholarship is only available to PhD level students.

Host Nationality:

It is hosted and taken at the Katholieke University Belgium.

Eligible Nationality:

Only students who are residents and nationals of Uganda are eligible to apply. Other developing countries may also be eligible.

#9. Flemish Ministry of Education Scholarships, University of Antwerp

The Flemish Ministry of Education Scholarships, provided and offered by the University of Antwerp, Belgium. It is a Master Mind program hosted by Belgium and made available international students which also aims to promote Flanders and Brussels as a top study destination.

Applications are currently open for the Master Mind Scholarships Fellowship Programme for Excellent Students.

It is a scholarship program offered by the Flemish government aiming to promote the internationalisation of the Flemish higher education. It is one of the numerous Ugandan scholarships in Belgium.

#11. The Government of Belgium Bilateral Scholarships for Ugandan Nationals

The  Belgian Scholarship Program funded by the Kingdom of Belgium, in co-operation with The Ministry of Finance, planning and economic development, The Ministry of Health, The Ministry of Education and Sports, The Ministry of Water and Environment offers bilateral scholarships to outstanding Ugandan students.

The Belgian government provides scholarships for Masters and Training Programmes at various local, regional and Belgian universities, particularly for Ugandan students.

#12. ARES Masters Scholarships for developing countries

The ARES offers students sponsorship program to students from Uganda and other developing countries to pursue a one-year specialised master’s degree programme or a 4-to-6-month advanced training course within a higher education institution of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, Belgium.

This programme is available to Masters degree students only.

Host Nationality:

This scholarship is hosted annually by a network of five universities and seven university colleges in Belgium.

It is available to Ugandan students.

Scholarship worth:

The scholarship worth €8,000 per academic year. The Flemish Host Institution can ask the applicant for a tuition fee of maximum €11o.8 per year.

#14. Full VUB-B PHOT Excellence Masters Scholarship in Belgium

Applications are invited for Full VUB B-PHOT International Excellence Masters Scholarships in Belgium. Applications are open for international students to pursue Masters of science at Vrije Universiteit Brussel in the academic year.
