The Erasmus Mundus Programme “BATTUTA” for Libyans

Brief Desciription

A cooperation and mobility programme in the area of Higher Education of the European Union, the Erasmus Mundus Programme aims to promote European higher education, to help improve and enhance the career prospects of students and to promote intercultural understanding through cooperation with third countries.

Action 2 of this program, to which the BATTUTA project is included, has specific objectives for contributing to the mutual enrichment of societies; to promote mobility for students, researchers as well as universities outside the EU, to contribute to the development of human resources and the international cooperation capacity of higher education institutions.

The programme BATTUTA is open to all types of mobility: Bachelor, Master, PhD, Post-Doctorate and Staff. The project has many features: firstly, an overall minimum of 285 scholarships will be awarded during the three years of the project. This is much more than for other programs of its kind. In particular, the programme allows mobility to be recognized in your Home University with which you stay in contact during your stay abroad.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for a BATTUTA scholarship, applicants must meet a set of minimum requirements.

General criteria:

  • Be a national of a country in North Africa for mobility to Europe or European national for mobility to North Africa
  • Not have resided or had a main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than 12 months during the last five years in any eligible European countries at the time of application to the consortium (only for North African applicants)
  • Not have benefited in the past from an Erasmus Mundus scholarship for the same type of mobility (excepting staff)
  • Have sufficient knowledge of the language of instruction or one of the languages ​​spoken in the host country;
  • Respect the specific criteria and applicable additions for each type of mobility (Bachelor, Master, Doctorate, Post-doctorate, staff).

 

Specific criteria for each type of mobility:

  • Bachelors (mobility): be at least in the 2nd year at the time of submission of the application. The validation of the second year must be demonstrated before departure.
  • Master (full) (North Africa to EU): hold a Bachelors obtained in North Africa at the time of submission of the application.
  • Master (mobility): be registered in the first year of a Master’s program of two years. If the student is in the third year of a Bachelors, he/she must prove that his/her admission in Master 1 is acquired through a certificate downloaded from the “other documents” section.
  • Doctorate (mobility): be enrolled in a doctoral program at the time of submission of the application.
  • Staff: be tenured staff or working full time in a partner institution or an institution of one of the eligible countries.

 

In addition to these criteria, others may be specific to each partner institution or to each degree. It is strongly recommended that applicants prepare their application in close collaboration with the contact person of their home institution in order to obtain clear information on specific eligibility criteria established either in their home institution (if applicable) or the host institution where they intend to apply.

To which target group do you belong?

All applicants belong to one of three target groups established by the European Commission for the Erasmus Mundus – Action 2 program.

 

Target I (North Africa and Europe):

Registered applicants or applicants of a formal link with partner institutions at the time of application. These candidates must have the formal support of the institution (official letter of support) when submitting their proposal.

 

Target II (North Africa and Europe):

  • Applicants enrolled in a non-partner institution of the eligible countries.
  • Applicants who have obtained a university degree or equivalent from an institution of one of the eligible countries but are not enrolled at the time of submission of their proposal.
  • All applicants are invited to have the formal support of the institution (official letter of support) when submitting the proposal.

 

Target III (North Africa):

The Battuta program will award scholarships (undergraduate/Bachelor level only) to applicants who are nationals of one of the five countries (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia) in a particularly vulnerable situation for social and political reasons.

Examples:

  • Applicants with a political refugee status or who are seeking asylum (international or according to the national law of one of the European recipient countries).
  • Applicants who can prove they have been the object of unjustified expulsion from university for reasons of race, ethnicity, religion, politics, gender or sexual orientation.
  • Applicants belonging to an indigenous population targeted by a specific national policy.
  • Candidates belonging to the IDP group (internally displaced person).
