Brief Description

Applications are invited for the Krzysztof Skubiszewski Scholarship and Research Grant for the academic year 2017-2018. The scholarship and the research grant are open to candidates from Central Europe, the Balkans, the Baltic States, Eastern Europe, Russia, Central Asia & the Caucasus.

The scholarship and the research grant are established to promote democracy, the respect of human rights, the rule of law, and the respect of law in international relations.

Krzysztof Skubiszewski was the first Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs to be appointed after Poland regained its independence; he served from 1989 to 1993.

Proficiency in foreign languages, particularly English, will be an important selection criterion.

Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue research.

Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded in the field of law, political science or contemporary history.

Scholarship Award: The scholarship holder will receive:

  • A total of 28 940 Polish z?oty (PLN), payable in monthly installments, in the case of an 9-month stay in Poland; if the stay lasts for less than 9 months, the amount paid will be proportionally reduced (the scholarship holder will have to pay revenue tax on this money, either in his country of permanent residence or in Poland);
  • free-of-charge accommodation in Warsaw or accommodation expenses during his/her stay in Poland;
  • travel costs for one trip from the place of permanent residence to Warsaw and back; and
  • Reimbursement of the cost of insurance covering emergency medical treatment in Poland.

Scholarship can be taken in Poland

Number of Scholarships: The Foundation will grant one scholarship and two research grants for the academic year 2017/2018.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the  scholarship

  • Applications are welcomed from candidates from any of the countries listed in the title of the present announcement, except Poland.
  • The scholarship and the research grant are open to candidates, who hold a master’s degree or equivalent, and:
  • have successfully defended their doctoral thesis (or have significant academic achievements)
  • Have accomplished works of significant importance in the public interest, especially in the area of promoting democracy and the rule of law or
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are under forty years of age.
  • Proficiency in foreign languages, particularly English, will be an important selection criterion.
  • Proficiency in Polish is desired. If the scholarship holder has no sufficient knowledge of Polish, he/she will undergo an intensive Polish language course in the period immediately before the beginning of the academic year (in August and in September). If the grantee needs a Polish language course, the Foundation will organize the course during his/her academic visit to Poland.

College Admission Requirement

Entrance Requirements: The scholarship is open to candidates who hold a master’s degree or equivalent, and have successfully defended their doctoral thesis (or have other significant academic achievements) or have accomplished works of significant importance in the public interest, especially in the area of promoting democracy and the rule of law.

English language Requirements: Proficiency in foreign languages, particularly English, will be an important selection criterion. Proficiency in Polish is desired. If the scholarship holder has no sufficient knowledge of Polish, he/she will undergo an intensive Polish language course in the period immediately before the beginning of the academic year (in August and in September). If the grantee needs a Polish language course, the Foundation will organize the course during his/her academic visit to Poland.

How to Apply: You can apply until April 13, 2017, by electronic mail to stypendia.studium-at-uw.edu.pl. A confirmation of receipt will be emailed to you. You cannot apply by paper mail.

If some documents that you want to send as part of your application cannot be attached to the e-mail message containing the application (for example, because the total size of your application and of all attached documents is too big), then you are invited to use one of the following methods:

A curriculum vitae in English or in Polish Documents can be sent on paper only when sending them electronically is highly inconvenient. In practice, this will be the case only for books or long articles published on paper. Diplomas, recommendation letters and all other relatively short documents must be sent electronically.

  • A letter describing your motivation and the proposed program of research to be undertaken during your internship or your academic visit. If you apply both for a scholarship and for a research grant, then you can indicate separately what program you want to undertake if you receive the scholarship, and what — if you receive a grant.
  • Copies of academic diplomas and, when appropriate, documents substantiating your works performed in the public interest, your social or political activities, your professional experience or your experience in the public service.
  • A list of publications, opinions and other works demonstrating your academic and professional achievements. Copies of the most important works. The list of academic publications should be written with clarity, and should follow rules commonly accepted for documents of this kind; among others, for each work mentioned, the list should contain the title in the original language and describe precisely where the work was published.
  • Certificates confirming proficiency in foreign languages, if you hold such certificates.
  • A letter of recommendation from your academic supervisor, a person to whom you report in your work or another person who can confirm your level of preparedness for the internship or the academic visit. It is advisable to attach additional letters of recommendation and names and contact information of persons from whom the Foundation may request an opinion about you.
  • You may attach other documents useful in evaluating your application.

Application Deadline: Applications must be sent no later than April 13, 2017.
