The Centre for Investigative Journalism Malawi (CIJM) in conjunction with the National Integrity Platform (NIP) and with financial support from The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH GIZ invites applications from journalists for internships at the Amabhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism in Johannesburg, South Africa and INK centre for Investigative Journalism in Gaborone, Botswana.

About the Award: This project is meant to enhance the skills of investigative journalists to report on corruption and integrity issues in Malawi.

Four slots of three months each have emerged for successful applicants to work with the Centres’ staff as an opportunity to strengthen their investigative skills hands-on.
CIJM advises applicants that this is a full hands-on programme where participants are expected to: – propose story ideas; do investigations; and publish under the strict guidance of their mentors.

 

Type: Internship

Eligibility: Applicants must, therefore:

  1. Be a working journalist from any Malawian media outlet (any other suitably qualified candidates such as freelancers are also eligible).
  2. Have interest in investigative journalism with focus on integrity issues in Malawi.
  3. Be available full-time to join the Centre/s for a set period and to work on set investigative projects. If employed a letter from your superior granting approval to participate in the programme will be required.

Female journalists are strongly encouraged to apply.

Value of Internship: The Centre for Investigative Journalism Malawi (CIJM) will offer a reasonable monthly stipend, air tickets, ground transportation and accommodation to successful candidates.

Duration of Internship: 3 months

How to Apply: 

  1. Submit a complete and up-to-date Curriculum Vitae.
  2. Submit a motivation of 300 words maximum stating explicitly why they want to join the program and what they hope to achieve. The motivation may indicate a preferred period and place of internship (South Africa or Botswana).
  3. Submit at least three original investigative story ideas on corruption and integrity issues in Malawi they want to pursue when selected. Preference will go to stories with a link to the country where the internship will be pursued and/or stories where some preliminary research has been done.
  4. Submit at least two samples of investigative stories. Such stories must have been published in any recognisable media outlet within the years from 2014 to date.
